Surrounded by a carpet of greenery in the valley between two moors lies Askrigg. From a distance you can see the landmark of St Oswald’s church tower nestled amongst the distinctive stone of the Yorkshire Dales.

Lying in the heart of Wensleydale, Askrigg has cobbled streets and a typical North Yorkshire rural charm.

The well-loved television series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ was filmed in Askrigg and the vet’s surgery ‘Skeldale House’ is easily recognisable.

Askrigg is just off the main Leyburn to Sedbergh road (A684) which runs on the other side of the river Ure. Turn off at Bainbridge to cross the bridge and get to Askrigg.

The nearest railway station is at Garsdale on the Settle to Carlisle line. A lovely journey going through quaint beautiful stations, you can choose to catch the train at Garsdale or Ribblehead and journey over the famous Ribblehead viaduct. There is also an excellent train service from Garsdale or Ribblehead to Leeds going via Skipton.

Askrigg and the surrounding area is a place to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Parks, whether walking or cycling or driving around the beautiful Yorkshire Dales exploring the many towns and villages, visiting Castles, Abbeys or taking a day trip to York or Harrogate. There are some great places to visit, and many walks and paths to find, you’ll always have plenty to do.

Askrigg is a bustling village with a strong local community. You won’t be at a loss of things to do when heading here for a break in our Yorkshire Dales Village. We are lucky to have a  well stocked village shop Sykes Store for all essentials and newspapers. A Deli & Tea Room The Bake-Well selling fresh bread homemade pies, quiches and take home meals. Over the road opposite the market cross you will find Heather and Grouse where a group of Dales artists and craftspeople have got together to open a delightful shop.
We’re lucky enough to have 3 pubs in the village and our very own brewery who’s beers are sold in all three of our local pubs.

When visiting the Yorkshire Dales, it can be difficult to decide just where to head for! 
Having worked in many different areas of the Dales from Leyburn to Hawes we have a wealth of knowledge of the area, helping you explore all the best spots across Wensleydale, and neighbouring Swaledale.

Venture a little further and you’ll find a whole host of local attractions to suit anyone no matter what you’re interested in. To begin exploring the area a great place to start is Mill Gill Force and Whitfield Gill force a spectacular local waterfall just a 15 minute walk from our front door. If you’re looking for something a little bigger it’s just a short drive to Teesdale where you’ll find High Force. You’ll see the River Tees cascading 25 metres down rocks which date back over 300 million years, a real sight to see and a great stop off on your way to the Cathedral city of Durham to check out where Harry Potter was filmed!

Less than a 15-minute drive from us you can delve into both history and film with a visit to Bolton Castle and Aysgarth Falls. Both were used to film scenes for the box office hit Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner.

At the heart of Wensleydale lies the gateway town of Leyburn, “A Town for all Seasons”. With spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, unusual local shops and cafés, traditional pubs and a weekly market.

Leyburn is a Market Town with a weekly Street Market on Fridays. Also, Local Farmers Markets once a month.

Although a small town, Leyburn has its own railway station on the re-opened Wensleydale Railway which offers tourist rides throughout the dale, mostly on diesel multiple units but occasionally on a steam train.

Milton House Bed and Breakfast is also ideal base to explore Swaledale the field Barns and Dry stone walls are a distinctive feature of Swaledale it has an abundance of wildflowers; with hillsides of primroses and bluebells and hay meadows bursting with colour of several species of wildflower.

Hay meadows are at their best for a very short time after grazing animals have been excluded and before the hay is ready to be cut. Therefore, the best time to see the Muker meadows and other similar meadows such as those in Langstrothdale, Swaledale, Dentdale and Wharfedale is between late May and early July, making Askrigg the ideal location for exploring the surrounding area.

Wensleydale is a great area to explore, whether walking or cycling. With some great places to visit, and many walks and paths to find, you’ll always have plenty to do. Or, if you’re just looking for a quiet retreat and a relaxing holiday, we are ideal for that too. There are a wealth of Local Attractions to visit withing the area, Castles, Abbeys, Local Crafts, Market Towns and Shopping.

Why not visit the Wensleydale Creamery in the market town of Hawes where the famous Wensleydale Cheese is made. Wensleydale Cheese is a historic fresh, mild cheese that has been made in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire since 1150 by Cistercian monks.

These monks continued to make the cheese until the dissolution of their monasteries in 1540. Traditionally, sheep’s milk was used, but over the time cow’s milk was also used. The Yorkshire Dales National Park is in northern England.

Wensleydale's principal settlements are Hawes and Leyburn; Aysgarth, Bainbridge, and Middleham are well-known villages. The shortest river in England, the River Bain, links Semerwater to the River Ure, at Bainbridge, the home to an Ancient Roman fort (part of the Roman road is walkable, up Wether Fell). Hardraw Force, the highest above-ground unbroken waterfall in England, is located at Hardraw, near Hawes.

Aysgarth Falls (High, Middle, Low) are famous for their beauty (rather than their height), attracting faroff visitors; they were also featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Some scenes from the 1992 film Wuthering Heights were also filmed at the falls. Other notable waterfalls are at Wensley (Harmby Falls), West Burton, and Whitfield Gill Force, near Askrigg.

Milton House B&B Askrigg is the ideal base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales Wonderful walks over hill and dale.

A great area to cycle and close to the Route taken by the Tour de France in 2014. This year 2018 the Tour de Yorkshire passes through the area in Richmond.

Our stunning landscape was shaped over millennia by ice. This created a rolling landscape of lushdales (valleys), windswept hills like the famous Three Peaks and vast expanses of heather-coveredmoors. A short drive from Milton House Bed and Breakfast Askrigg will take you up the moor road with spectacular views driving between the dales, small villages scattered along the way.

Stop off at one of the tea rooms along the way or take in a pub lunch. In the evening relax in front of a real fire and one of the three village pubs.
